According to NOS, more than half of the fatbikes checked in Amsterdam were found to be rigged, leading to potential fines of up to €290 for those caught with tuned bikes. Understanding Portugal E-Bike Laws
Portugal e-bike laws are designed to ensure the safety and well-being of all road users. Similar to many European countries, e-bikes in Portugal are categorized into three classes:
- Class 1: Pedal-assist e-bikes with a maximum speed of 25 km/hr.
- Class 2: Throttle-controlled e-bikes with a maximum speed of 25 km/hr.
- Class 3: Pedal-assist e-bikes with a maximum speed of up to 45 km/hr.
For Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes, no special license is required, making them accessible for most riders. However, Class 3 e-bikes, which can reach higher speeds, often require additional regulations such as mandatory insurance and a driving license. Portuguese authorities enforce these regulations to maintain safety and prevent accidents that might occur from excessively high-speed biking.
